"For God's Sake, Please Stop the Aid!"
The Kenyan economics expert James Shikwati, 35, says that aid to Africa does more harm than good. The avid proponent of globalization spoke with SPIEGEL about the disastrous effects of Western development policy in Africa, corrupt rulers, and the tendency to overstate the AIDS problem.

I would note that James Shikwaki is identified as a libertarian which means he has an ax to grind.

That said, he is certainly right that money thrown at developing country's problems will not work, any more than at any other problems.

However, I don't think problems in much of the developing world can be solved without some outside capitol investment. The trick is to smart about it, which often is not the case, since politics often determines aid money.

One more thing. We would probably do the most good by arranging favorable trade conditions for developing economies instead of killing them with protectionist commodity policies which help Americans and hurt the developing world. (Sugar comes to mind)

Having spent some time in Pakistan, I sympathize, Mandy, with your struggles, and questions about how long term the effects of what you do. I suspect my major contribution was just to demonstrate compassion and caring.

Jim
